Orbot: Proxy with Tor APK

Orbot is a free proxy app that empowers other apps to use the internet more securely. Orbot uses Tor to encrypt your Internet traffic and then hides it by bouncing through a series of computers around the world. Tor is free software and an open network that helps you defend against a form of network surveillance that threatens personal freedom and privacy, confidential business activities and relationships, and state security known as traffic analysis.*** Android 4.0 and lower, you can download older versions from guardianproject.info/releases/ or through the FDroid.org open app store at https://f-droid.org. The last release with KitKat and older support is: guardianproject.info/releases/Orbot-v14.1.4-UpToKitKat-nonPIE.apk ***

Latest Updates

The latest major update for Orbot: Proxy with Tor is regarding the interface and user experience. Since its launch in 2009, this is the 16th major release. The main screen of the application has undergone a complete revamp and the functions are more easily accessible. They have also created an onboarding setup wizard for those who are using this app for the first time. It is designed to help them configure connections to the Tor network where it is blocked.

This release also offers support to the users who are looking to unlock specific applications that might not be available in their region or on their network. Users would also be able to activate the app’s in-built VPM from the main page and choose the app that want routed via the Tor network. Users would be able to rebuild connections and refresh Tor identity – by using the circular reload icon in the app. The updates will soon be seen in the Guardian Project’s F-Droid Repo as well.

How does Tor work?

Did you know that Tor is one of the most popular and widely used software for accessing the internet anonymously? Tor has over 3,000 bridges and 7,000 relays. More surprising is the fact that all of these are managed and operated by volunteers! If you have successfully established the connection, your messages, web history, and other online activity cannot be traced at all.

Tor’s network is made using volunteer nodes, or relays. It is the unit that receives internet signals and passes it on to the next node. The connection request is generated randomly and there is no record documented for the path. This is why there is absolutely no way for a relay to follow the traffic. Multiple layers of encryption in added in a process known as onion routing, making it harder to follow your digital footsteps.

*** SAMSUNG GALAXY USERS ***
On some devices, aSamsung app is listening on the same network port that Orbot needs. Download ‘SockStat’ from Google Play. Look for the app on port 9050. Force stop and disable that app. You can also try to change Orbot’s “Tor SOCKS” setting under the Debug section to 9051 or AUTO.
*****

Orbot is the only app that creates a truly private internet connection. As the New York Times writes, “when a communication arrives from Tor, you can never know where or whom it’s from.” Tor won the 2012 Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) Pioneer Award.

★ ACCEPT NO SUBSTITUTES: Orbot is the safest way to use the Internet on Android. Period. Orbot bounces your encrypted traffic several times through computers around the world, instead of connecting you directly like VPNs and proxies. This process takes a little longer, but the strongest privacy and identity protection available is worth the wait.
★ PRIVATE WEB SURFING: Use with Orfox, the most anonymous way to access any website, even if it’s normally blocked, monitored, or on the hidden web.
★ PRIVATE CHAT MESSAGING: Use ChatSecure with Orbot to chat confidentially with anyone, anywhere for free. Get ChatSecure: goo.gl/O3FfS
★ PRIVACY FOR APPS: Any installed app can use Tor if it has a proxy feature, using the settings found here: goo.gl/2OA1y Use Orbot with Twitter, or try private web searching with DuckDuckGo: goo.gl/lgh1p
★ PRIVACY FOR EVERYONE: Tor can help you confidentially research a competitor, get around the Facebook block at school, or circumvent a firewall to watch sports at work.
